Mai Tai 2011

January 18, 2012

Mai Tai is a gathering of technology innovators and kitesurf enthusiasts on Maui, Hawaii. Originally started by venture capitalist Bill Tai and kitesurfer Susi Mai, the camp has grown in size and is now in it’s fifth year. I provided video from the event to business websites such as Bloomberg.

SUP & Gopro

January 18, 2012

Here’s a couple of SUP videos I’ve made with my GoPro camera.

I’ve been stand up paddling for little over a year now and I really enjoy it as an alternative to surfing. We don’t get a lot of quality surf here and the bigger board and paddle really opens up new possibilities for having fun in mushy waves. I also bought a Naish 9’6″ Hokua for use in steeper surf. The board is a lot narrower with less volume then my Mana board, but also way more manouverable. By applying pressure to the back foot the board turns on a dime and allows for more of a shortboard style of riding while still being able to walk the nose.

Tønes Live

February 17, 2011

Tønes is a Norwegian singer/songwriter who combines acoustic melodies with quirky lyrics.
I was hired to shoot and edit a full live performance at Sandnes Kulturhus, in front of a crowd of more than five hundred people. John Iver Berg of Theon Productions assisted as second camera operator (check out John’s excellent cinematography on Kaizers Orchestra’s music video Hjerteknuser).

We used five DSLR’s to cover all the angles. One 5D with a 50mm lens was set in the middle of the auditorium for wide coverage and main camera. John provided closer angles with a 5D on a tripod and 70-200mm lens from roughly the same spot.
Meanwhile I was shooting from the sides of the stage with 24-105 and 70-200mm on a Zacuto Fast Draw for alternative angles and close-ups. A Nikon 7000D on a gorilla-pod was set to shoot straight up at Tønes while also capturing the changing moods provided by the smoke and lighting. The last camera was a Panasonic GH2 set to shoot from the back of the stage towards the crowd with the band in the foreground.
Apart from a small hiccup at the end where the main camera ran out of storage space everything went smoothly.

Sound was captured using a Zoom H4N recorder connected to the audio mixer via XLR as well as the onboard stereo mic for crowd and ambience. A second H4N recorded sound from the back of the auditorium. I used Pluraleyes to sync all five cameras and three separate audio sources in Final Cut. This worked fairly well, though I must say I had some issues with the sync at times because the main audio would sync to the echo of the onboard camera mics that were used for reference. A good shotgun mic mounted on the cameras for reference would probably eliminate this issues. All in all Pluraleyes produced stunningly accurate syncs, making the lack of timecode on the DSLR’s pretty much a non-issue.

Below are four out of sixteen songs we recorded that night.

Martin Söderström – Whitestyle 2011

February 4, 2011

I shot this video last weekend for Specialized, featuring their new team rider Martin Söderström, at the White Style mountainbike slopestyle competition in Leogang, Austria.
It was my first time shooting any bike sport, so everything was new and a little intimidating at first. Great fun though!

Red Bull Ragnarok 2011 Highlight in photos

January 13, 2011

The 24 minute highlight show from the 2011 Ragnarok came out pretty good even though it was grey and raining for most of the competition. I can’t post the full show here as it’s made for TV broadcast, but check out some stills from the show below.

Red Bull Ragnarok 2011 Promo

January 12, 2011

Here’s the promo video I made for the 2011 edition of the Red Bull Ragnarok. Once again 200 snowkiters will battle it out in a last-man-standing race on the Hardangervidda plateau.
Hopefully we won’t have any volcanic eruptions causing havoc this year like we did last time..
